Why we need to exfoliate
An essential skin care need is to exfoliate and slough off dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. If you have dry skin, oily skin, blackheads, acne, sundamaged or flakey skin, exfoliating is a primary, beneficial part of skin care.

The skin is the major eliminator of toxins and if dead cells are present, these form a cellant, meaning toxins cannot release and therefore build up creating a dull complexion, then lines, leading to wrinkles, dryness and other problems such as spots, and acne.

Exfoliating Dry Skin
Skin can be dry for many reasons, including lack of moisture, the build up of dead skin cells that don’t easily shed, and abnormal skin cells that adhere to each other in a way that prevent normal exfoliation and normal moisture retention.

As you age, the outer layer of your skin does not shed as rapidly as it once did. Exfoliating Oily Skin
A blackhead or blemish forms when the oil gland (pore) produces too much oil (sebum) and/or a tendency for skin cells that should be naturally sloughing off to instead fall inside the pore and get trapped.

The more skin cells that build up in the pore, the more oil will be held back from flowing easily out of the pore, and the result can be a blackhead or a blemish.

The oil works as an adhesive, preventing the shedding of skin cells. Regular exfoliating will help skin cells shed as freely as possible and keep pores from getting clogged. The more you keep exfoliating the skin cells in a normal manner, the less cell debris can fill up the pore and the less likelihood of producing blackheads and blemishes.
